10mm Civil War Wreckage

Today, I have some photos of my first batch of Civil War battlefield wreckage. I whipped these up a few weeks ago using some spare bits that I had lying around from Pendraken and Old Glory. I plan to use them to dress up my table or as objective markers as needed.

Quick and Easy 10mm/15mm Tombstones

I needed some tombstones for my upcoming refight of the Battle of Salem Church, so I decided to try a method that Chris Palmer posted on his blog that uses wooden craft sticks to model tombstones. Basically, all you do is cut off the ends of the craft sticks and glue them to a base. You then paint them and flock the base. The result is a great looking cemetery. 10mm American Civil War Miniatures Comparison 2.0

My first order of 10mm American Civil War figures from Blaze Away Miniatures arrived Friday afternoon. I must say the quality of these figures is excellent, and they match up very well to Pendraken. With the arrival of these figures, I decided that it was a very good time to update my 10mm ACW comparison photo. Along With Blaze Away Miniatures, I also added figures from Starfort and the Baggage Train to the comparison photo. I hope this new photo proves to be useful.

New battle report posted- The Battle of Shiloh Church (Sherman’s Stand)

American Civil War Project (Phase 2)

2012 is here and its time to begin phase two of my 10mm American Civil War Project. Last year I was able to paint just fewer than 400 bases of infantry (1600 figures), 30 artillery bases and various commanders. My main goal for this year is to double the size of my armies. With that in mind my goals for 2012 are:

1. Paint 200 bases (800 figures) of Union infantry


2. Paint 200 bases (800 Figures) of Confederate infantry


3. Paint 30 bases (90 Figures) of Mounted Confederate Cavalry


4. Paint 30 bases (120 Figures) of dismounted Confederate Cavalry


5. Paint 30 bases (90 Figures) of Mounted Union Cavalry


6. Paint 30 bases (120 Figures) of dismounted Union Cavalry


7. Paint 10 bases (40 figures) of Union Artillery


8. Build/Paint 6’ of entrenchments


9. Game 15 battles from 1862.

These goals are somewhat aggressive and a lot depends on when Pendraken starts to releases their new range of figures. If I can meet or come close to meeting these goals, I will feel like I had a productive year. My plan is to post monthly updates on my progress here, so be sure to check back. Now onto what I’m currently working on.

I have spent the past few weeks working on painting mounted and dismounted cavalry. I have found that Perrin’s mounted cavalry are the best offered in 10mm scale and to my disappointment nobody really makes great dismounted cavalry. Below are some photos of my progress so far. I will share more details and photos once I get them based.

Preparations for my first game of the year are also underway. This game will be based on the first days fighting around the Elkhorn Tavern during the Battle of Pea Bridge. For this game I will be using the scenario published in the “Guns at Gettysburg Scenarios 2, Frontier” book by Paul D. Stevenson. The game will be held at Walt’s Hobby shop on January 22^nd. Below is an image of the buildings that I’ve been working on for the game.

These building will serve as the Elkhorn Tavern and Clemon’s Farmhouse for my upcoming Battle of Pea Ridge game

10mm American Civil War Miniatures Comparison

With the recent release of Kallistra’s 10mm Civil War range, I have decided to put together a quick 10mm Civil War manufactures comparison. For this comparison I used infantry figures from the following manufactures:

• Kallistra


• Minifigs


• Pendraken


• GHQ


• Old Glory


• Perrin(US) Magister Militum (UK)

To my knowledge the only manufactures missing from this comparison are The Baggage Train, Starfort, and Pithead.




Note 1: I added the 15mm figure from Musket Miniatures for a size reference.

Note 2: All Old Glory infantry comes in strips of five. For this comparison I cut one figure from the strip.

Kallistra figures have great detail, but are larger than any other 10mm ACW range. In my opinion the best matching figures in the comparison are Old Glory and Perrin. For my own project I will continue to primarily use Pendraken’s range and I will use Old Glory, Minifigs and Perrin to fill in the missing gaps.

Painted 10mm Civil War Commanders

Today I have some photos of my completed Civil War command stands. These stands consist of miniatures from Perrin, Old Glory, and Pendraken. To my surprise the figures from these three manufactures match up so well that I had no problem mounting them on the same base.

Division/Corps Commanders

For my Division/Corps commanders I mounted two or three figures on 1 ½” round bases that I got from Michel’s craft store. Inspired by a recent post on The Miniatures Page, I decided to add a mounted standard bearer to each command stand. The mounted standard bearer figures are from Perrin’s range.

ACW 10mm painted US and CSA Artillery and Limbers

This week I have some photos of my completed artillery and limbers.

Confederate Artillery

First up are some photos of my Confederate artillery. The crews are from Perrine and Old Glory and the guns are from Old Glory. I must say that Perrine’s figures are very nice and they match up well with Old Glory’s figures. I will probably be adding more Perrine figures to my armies in the future. I chose to use Old Glory’s cannons because I feel they scale much better to the crews compared to the guns offered by Pendraken and Perrine. At the bottom of this post I have placed a couple of images that compares the different manufactures cannons.

Limbers

For limber I used a mix of Old Glory and Pendraken. Once again Old Glory’s limbers and horses seem to have the best proportions compared to the infantry. Note: I plan to add limber riders latter on.

Artillery limbers Comparison, (Old Glory on left) (Pendraken on right) Old Glory’s horses and limbers are slightly larger than Pendrakens . Also, pendrakens rider seems a little too large for the horse that he’s riding.

When I was building my artillery units I noticed that there were large discrepancies in the sizes of cannons between different manufactures. The images below are some examples.

Artillery Comparison #1 (Right-Old Glory) (Left-Perrine). Do I need to say more? Old Glory’s artillery towers over Perrine’s. At the time I took these photos I didn’t have any Pendraken cannons on hand to compare. Over all Pendraken cannons are comparable in size to Perrine. (I will update the photo to include a Pendraken cannon in the future.)
